What is the mission of the Nominating Ministry? The mission of the Nominating Ministry is to support the ministry of APC by nominating Elders, Deacons, and the Preschool Committee The Nominating Committee strives to serve the Lord by identifying those individuals who, by God’s providence and gracious gifts, are called to serve as Elders and Deacons of the church. The committee also serves the church, by helping those individuals interpret their call and discover the forms of ministry to which they are called. Once identified, the committee presents these individuals to the congregation in the form of a nomination for election to the office of Elder or Deacon.
The Nominating Committee will follow the rules and guidance outlined in the Book of Order, Chapter XIV, G-14.0000 to G.14.0300. - ELDERS are the spiritual leaders of the church. Based on historical church leadership as found in the scriptures (1 Peter 5: 1-4 and 1 Timothy 3: 1-7) elders set an example to the congregation in their service. The Book of Order says that elders “exercise leadership, government, and discipline.” They have “responsibilities for the life of a particular church as well as the Church at large.” The Book of Order continues with the charge for elders by stating “It is the duty of elders, individually and jointly, to strengthen and nurture the faith and life of the congregation…” At APC, one or two Elders (co-)chair each of the operating committees: Missions & Evangelism, Stewardship, Personnel, Admin & Faciliies, Adult Discipleship, Worship and Music, Youth Discipleship, and Nominating.
- DEACONS provide the caring connection of the church among its members. The first identification of deacons being assigned to care for the members of the church is recorded in Acts 6: 1-6 when the Apostles chose seven others to attend to these duties so the twelve could continue with the ministry of the Word. The Book of Order states that “it is the duty of Deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress.”
Elders and Deacons at APC are nominated to serve for a term of three years, with a third of each group retiring each year. Positions that become vacant when members move or for other reasons can no longer serve are also filled upon recommendation of the Nominating Committee. The committee meets monthly (or more frequently if required).
The Nominating Committee serves the Lord and the congregation. As a member of the congregation, the committee would welcome YOUR suggestions and recommendations. If you feel there is a member who is called to serve, or if you feel that you are called to serve, please let the committee know.
